![]() ![]() ![]() Enchantments run deep on Cadence: gossip is carried by the wind, plaid shawls can be as strong as armor, and the smallest cut of a knife can instill fathomless fear. But when young girls start disappearing from the isle, Jack is summoned home to help find them. Jack Tamerlaine hasn’t stepped foot on Cadence in ten long years, content to study music at the mainland university. House of Earth and Blood meets The Witch's Heart in New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Ross’s brilliant first adult fantasy, set on the magical isle of Cadence where two childhood enemies must team up to discover why girls are going missing from their clan. “With lush world building and lyrical prose, A River Enchanted feels like the echo of a folktale from a world right next to our own.” -Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of For the Wolf ![]() ![]() Have you ever noticed some of the worst sicknesses in history have a lyrical sound to them? Words like malaria, diarrhea, cholera. So, like I said-what you’re seeing right now isn’t the real me. The decor is modern-lots of black and stainless steel-and anyone who enters knows a man lives there. And it has every modern convenience, every big-boy toy you can think of: surround sound, satellite speakers, and a big-screen plasma that would make any man fall on his knees and beg for more. The one I usually live in is spotless I have a girl come by twice a week. The tables and floor are littered with beer bottles, pizza boxes, and empty ice cream tubs. The guy in the dirty gray T-shirt and ripped sweatpants? ![]() ![]() ![]() I really liked this contemporary YA novel. ![]() ![]() Luckily, Hoover provided enough backstory that I was able to catch up on most of what I'd missed in book one. I love being able to go into a book with no preconceived notions about it. I'm glad I didn't read any reviews of either Slammed or Point of Retreat before reading the book. So, I decided just to jump right in and hoped that Hoover would provide a good enough summary in book two so that I wouldn't be too confused. I had no money in my book budget to buy Slammed and my library did not have a copy. I emailed the publisher to see if they would send me Slammed, book one, first, and never heard back. Are you ready to hear my confession? I read book two without reading book one first! I still can't believe I did it.I was accepted to read Point of Retreat through NetGalley. I broke one of my cardinal rules of reading with Point of Retreat. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She discovers that Arthur is a friendly, understanding, trustworthy, and positive person and gives dear Arthur the nickname “Truluv.” Arthur and Maddy develop a friendship and when Arthur’s nosy neighbor, Lucille, becomes involved, they discover the joys of “found family.” My Thoughts: On one of Arthur’s routine trips to the cemetery to have lunch and conversation with his wife, he meets Maddy, a troubled teenage girl who hides in the cemetery to avoid school. Genre/Categories: Contemporary Fiction, Uplit, Found Family, Multi-generational Friendship The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg ![]() ![]() Clearly the narrator would have been better suited to reading Thomas Hardy or Mark Twain or one of the other classics. However, the narration was a little jarring. I wanted a steamy, paranormal, fast-paced adventure/sex/love story, and that's what you get. Lots of "verily" or "hereunto" and just random historical accent words that good historical novelists wouldn't dream of using - but chances are, you're not reading the Black Dagger books because of the historical detail either. ![]() Whenever JR Ward takes her story back in time, the writing is stilted - Ward's just not in her element trying to make language or description seem historically accurate. I wasn't, and I wasn't disappointed by the plot.
